We are a culture obsessed by our diets. It’s gone way beyond actual health benefits or building a strong body and brain. When did nutrition become so complicated?
Current food culture has shifted our understanding of food, reminded us of where our food comes from and brings people together in a wonderful satiated way. Unfortunately some weird elitist aspects have also developed.
I’m not sure what came first: the photos of ’the best’ dish shared on Instagram or supermarket marketing of ‘the best’ food? Suddenly we are faced with the cult of superfood. That sexy new pomegranate juice bottle or the gluten-free grain is packaged to catch our eye and make us believe that this exotic foodstuff will change lives with its miracle ingredients. The junk science behind it is just as annoying as the social media posts of the alleged ‘cleanest food’. It’s faddist and feeds into disordered eating behaviours.
